Female journalist discussing why UK energy prices are so high

How to save energy this winter

The most cost-effective and eco-friendly energy is the energy you do not waste. That is why we have put together some tips to help you lower your energy bills now, along with longer-term improvements that can make your home more efficient and environmentally friendly for years to come.

Monitor and manage your energy habits using a smarter meter

If you have not had a smart meter installed yet, it is a great first step toward saving energy, and it is free. With an in-home display, you can easily track your energy use in real time, helping you see the cost of high-usage appliances like tumble dryers as you use them.

Plus, a smart meter gives you access to Smart tariffs which can reward you for using electricity during off-peak times.

Prevent heat loss and stay warmer for less

When you switch on the heating, up to a quarter of that warmth can escape through an uninsulated roof. That means feeling colder, wasting energy, and paying more.

Loft insulation is a simple and cost-effective solution to keep your home warmer for less, and it typically pays for itself in just years through reduced energy bills.

Wall insulation is a bigger investment, but it still pays off in a few years through savings on your bills. Also, Live in a period property with charming but draughty single-glazed windows comfort.

Make sure your heating system is running efficiently

Radiators can lose efficiency over time as air gets trapped inside them. A quick check: if the top of your radiator feels noticeably cooler than the bottom, it like needs bleeding.

Bleeding a radiator is simple. Just pick up a radiator key from your local hardware store. With the heating switched off, turn the valve slightly and use a cloth to catch any escaping water. You will likely hear a hissing sound, and that is the trapped air being released. Once the air stops and water begins to flow, tighten the valve back up.

Another common issue is blocked airflow. Placing furniture or curtains directly in front of radiators can trap heat. If possible, leave at least a 10cm gap between your radiator and any furniture to help heat circulate more effectively.

Take control with timers, thermostats, and radiator settings

Timers and thermostats automatically maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, typically between 18-21°C during the day and 16-19°C overnight for healthy adults. Keeping your home at a steady, ambient temperature is usually more cost effective than letting it cool down and then using a heating boost.

Upgrading to a smart thermostat offers even greater control. For example, you can set a holiday mode when you are away and schedule the heating to warm your home just before you return.

For rooms you use less often, simply turn down the radiator valve and keep the door closed to save energy without sacrificing comfort elsewhere.

Use your appliances smarter to save electricity

Saving energy is not just about heating. There are many ways to reduce your electricity bills. Swap old bulbs for LEDs and turn lights off when you leave a room. Use appliances like tumble dryers less often by hanging washing to dry or using an energy-efficient dehumidifier. Batch cooking meals helps make the most of having the oven on, and using the hob or microwave more frequently can save energy compared to the main oven. Keeping your fridge and freezer full, filling gaps with bottles of water, helps them run more efficiently. Remember to turn appliances off at the plug rather than leaving them on standby, and unplug devices once their batteries are fully charged. Finally, when purchasing new appliances or devices, always check their energy efficiency ratings to maximize savings over time. For long-term electricity savings, consider installing solar panels paired with a home battery.
