How many solar panels do I need to run my home?
The ideal number of solar panels depends on your household’s energy usage. Years ago, a typical home might have installed a 16-panel (4 kWp) system—largely influenced by government incentives like the Feed-in Tariff. But with today’s more efficient solar technology, similar energy output can be achieved with just 10 panels. Rather than follow a one-size-fits-all approach, we assess your actual energy usage over the past 12 months. This allows us to recommend a system that’s right for your needs and lifestyle. For families or larger households, we often install systems between 5 and 9 kWp, which can mean up to 30 panels depending on your roof space. To further increase energy independence, around 85% of our installations also include battery storage—typically between 5 and 10 kWh—to store excess energy for use later in the day or during power outages. .
How much does it cost to install solar panels?
Domestic solar installations typically start from around £5,000 (including VAT but excluding scaffolding). However, the final cost depends on the size of the system you need. If your household uses a lot of electricity, a larger system may be more suitable. For higher energy users, adding battery storage can be a smart upgrade—allowing you to store excess solar energy and use it when demand is higher or during the evening.
Can I get solar panels for free?
At present, there are no government grants available for domestic solar panel installations, and current policies from both the Government and Opposition suggest this is unlikely to change in the near future.
